The Perfect Natural Henna Recipe for body Art
If you've ever wondered how to make your own fresh, natural henna at home—without chemicals or store-bought shortcuts—this guide is for you. At The Henna Realm, I believe in the beauty of simple ingredients, time-honoured methods, and the joy of making something with your own hands.
Here’s my go-to henna recipe, carefully refined through years of practice, perfect for your skin.
You'll need:
1. 100g Organic Rajasthani Henna Powder
(I always recommend high-quality, finely sifted powder for the best results.)
2. 30ml Essential Oil – choose one: eucalyptus, lavender, or cajeput
(These oils help release the dye and enhance stain quality.)
3. About 45g Sugar
(This helps the paste stay smooth and sticky on the skin. Works best if you're in Melbourne. If you're in less dry areas, please use less sugar.)
4. Water or lemon juice – added gradually to reach the right consistency.
5. Piping bag and rolled cellophane cones.
Instructions:
1. Combine the dry ingredients (henna powder + sugar) in a bowl (preferably glass to avoid staining).
2. Add in the essential oil.
3. Gradually add water and mix to form a mash potato consistency.
4. Cover the bowl tightly and let it rest for dye release — about 5 to 8 hours or overnight, away from direct sunlight.
Notes:
The amount of time henna takes to dye release depends greatly on the temperature. If you want dye release to happen faster, put your paste in a warmer room, but away from sunlight. You can check after 6hrs to see if dye release has happened.
Some signs that the dye has bene released:
- The top layer of the paste has changed colour when you dig in (see photo).
- Dip your finger in and leave the paste on for 5-10 mins. The stain should be bright orange. If it is yellow or faint, your paste is not ready yet. Wait more time and maybe check every 2 hrs or so.

5. After dye release, add more water gradually until you reach a smooth, toothpaste-like consistency.
6. Pour into pipping bag and then pipe into your cones.
Your henna is ready to be used! Enjoy!
Store cones it in the freezer to keep it fresh for up to 6-8 months (if not more..).
